Abu el Abed is a 27-year-old thin guy with a scrappy beard, dusty pants, and a few missing teeth. So you can imagine how wide my eyes became when he casually dug into his pants pocket and pulled out the biggest wad of cash I've ever seen.

For every story I file, there's always one anecdote that doesn't make the final cut, but that I'm nevertheless in love with. In this case, that anecdote came from Dr. Ali Qleibo.

Grant Fuller is an independent radio producer living in Mexico City. He has a degree from Trinity University and a certificate from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. His work has appeared on the World Vision Report, NYTimes.com, Weekend America, and Morning Edition through the American oral history project, StoryCorps.

Heba Aly is a Khartoum-based freelance journalist. She has worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in both radio and television, as well as many of Canada's largest daily newspapers. She has also worked for the United Nations' humanitarian news service (IRIN) in Senegal, West Africa and Chad, central Africa.
As a freelancer in Sudan, Heba has contributed news and features to various outlets, including the Globe and Mail, Christian Science Monitor, Public Radio International and IRIN. She speaks fluent Englsh and French, and also speaks Arabic and Spanish.
Simone Orendain is an independent radio producer currently based in Manila, Philippines where she was born. Before returning to Manila in the spring of 2010, Simone worked at public radio stations in Charlotte, NC and Chicago where she grew up. She contributes to NPR, Voice of America, The World, the World Vision Report and Marketplace.
Prue Clarke is an independent reporter specializing in Africa. She has exposed child slavery, corruption in foreign mining operations and a burgeoning child sex industry. Her reporting has won numerous awards in the United States and Canada.
Prue was previously a reporter with the Financial Times newspaper and the ABC.
